Ceramics Quarter 3
Welcome to EPJ's Virtual High School Art Show! Below you will find work completed by high school Ceramics students during the third quarter. Please make sure to scroll all the way down to see each assignment gallery! You can click each picture to view it in more detail.
Ceramic Slab Boxes
Students were tasked with using the slab constructive method to create some kind of a box or container, inclusive of a lid with a handle. The slab method in clay involves rolling out clay like cookie dough using a rolling pin. Slabs are then sliced from the rolled out clay. Artists must then attach the slab together using the slipping and scoring method.
Ceramic Coil Pots
Students had to use the coil method to create a container. The coil method involves molding clay into long, skinny, snakelike shapes, then piling them on top of each other to create the container. Each coil must be slipped and scored together.
Ceramic Mugs
Students had to use the pottery wheel to create a cylinder container in a mug-like shape. Students then had to pull their own handle and attach it using the slipping and scoring method.
Pinch Pot Animals
Students had to use the pinch method to create a bowl-like shape. Students were then challenged to turn that bowl-like shape into an animal by creating attachments and using glaze techniques.
Slab "Paintings"
Students were challenged to create a "painting" using only glaze on a plain slab of clay. The "painting" could be representational or abstracted. Students had to utilize at least 8 different glazes and had to experiment with layering glazes to create different effects. This was a challenging project, as glazes look different when using them for application vs. when they are fired; the color of glazes may change completely in the firing process. An example of a glazed mug before and after it has been fired is included as the first picture to show what glaze looks like before and after firing. The rest of the photos are student glaze "paintings".
Wheel Bowls
Students were challenged to use the pottery wheel to create their first bowl. Bowls could be of varying sizes and ultimately could be used for different purposes.
