Dictionary Word Illustrations
For this assignment, students had to select a word to illustrate from a dictionary. Part of the challenge was that the drawing had to be completed on an actual dictionary page. Students had to show both the thing they were illustrating and include the word in their drawings.
Symmetrical Animal Prints
For this assignment, students learned about symmetry and then had to create a folding acrylic paint print. Students had to sketch an animal lightly on their paper. Students then folded the paper in half, and painted only half of their drawing. The print was made by folding the paper in half again while the paint was still wet, creating a symmetrical animal print.
Radial Balance Weaving
Students learned about radial balance and the basic tenets of weaving. Students then had to create a circular weaving using a homemade loom made of a paper plate that showed radial balance upon completion.
Grid Portraits
Students learned the grid technique, a concept in art that can be used to achieve realism. A grid is drawn over a reference picture, followed by the artist drawing the same grid on a separate piece of paper and then focusing on drawing what is in each box in their reference picture, versus working on the entire thing at once. This helps to focus on achieving accuracy. Students had to choose a person to create an emphasized drawing of; emphasis was achieved by using high contrast finishing touches such as charcoal, as well as by making the artworks on a large scale.
